Transforming a side yard into a sanctuary…

After 12 years in her home, and planning to stay for many years to come, Kym reached out for support in transforming her tiny, but super sunny side yard into an upgraded cozy living space for having guests over for cocktails and dinner surrounded by beautiful flowers and plants. She’d tried growing flowers in pots, but hadn’t had much success with her previous attempts.

We initially scheduled a spring consultation to dial in her crop preferences and reflect on her existing daily rhythms. We landed on a plan to reinforce her fence and install new self watering containers, while also grouping together the different sized pots she already had on hand. We scheduled garden lesson visits for May, June, July, September and October to plant, harvest, re-plant, identify pests, fertilize, and winterize. BUG made it easy by supplying all of the potting soil, balanced organic fertilizer, plants and seeds to set Kym up for success.

We prioritized leafy greens for their continuous harvests, along with edible flowers and herbs, which would be multipurpose - for their culinary uses in meals, and as easy to reach from the hot tub aromatherapy and garnishes for cocktails. Different varieties of everbearing strawberries would yield a steady supply of sweet fruit throughout the summer and fall, and their runners would provide a fun aesthetic as they draped over the front of the containers. We had so much fun creatively combining the different perennials Ashley procured from local garden centers and the annuals she brought from BUG headquarters. We grouped plants together to create dynamic containers that included those “thrill, fill and spill” plants as well as offered guidance on plant spacing and root depth needs to plant the right plants in the right containers.
