Our unique restoration juniper raised garden beds give us a sense of place, connecting us to our high desert home, improve ecosystems, and support local mills.
Raised garden beds are a great choice for vegetable gardens in Central Oregon because they can be filled with high quality raised bed soil, dramatically improving the drainage and organic matter in your vegetable garden compared to our native soil. They also aid in warming up soil in the spring and retaining heat in the fall, compared to in-ground garden beds. Raised garden beds allow for clearly defined paths and planting space, reducing soil compaction since you won’t ever be walking on your soil as you might when accessing an in-ground garden bed. Plus, they look beautiful (at least we think so)!
Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) is a native plant species found throughout the high desert of Central and Eastern Oregon. However, juniper has grown to dominate our landscape- displacing shrubs and grasses, contributing to soil erosion and loss of biodiversity. As a result, there is an effort to restore grassland ecosystems by cutting juniper in Oregon, which has also shown to increase groundwater on some sites as well.
