Making use of a rocky slope for terraced raised garden beds in partial sun…

After DJ, a brand-new Bend gardener, received a gift certificate for a BUG consultation, we met and quickly created a plan for making better use of his fenced, but somewhat shaded, rabbit attracting existing garden area with very steep access! We amended the soil in the existing raised bed and topped it with a mini hoophouse with pest protection netting to extend the area’s growing season and keep rabbits out. We also built a couple additional beds along the fence line for short to medium height leafy greens and protected them with critter cages. We created a crop plan together and checked in with DJ every couple weeks throughout the growing season for garden lessons to troubleshoot pest issues that came up, and to stay on track with the plantings in the plan, bringing unique short season plant varieties to be planted. We also harvested A LOT of food together! We loved having DJ help in the (re)build of his space and know that the investment in one-on-one lessons paid off in future seasons! He is now confidently editing the crop plan we initially made together and still checks in with us at our plant sales!
