Planning for edible gardening during new construction…
We first visited this site as the Lyons family was dialing in their landscape plan during the construction of their new residence. We were able to locate the ideal location for an edible garden in their blank slate and give them recommendations to pass along to their irrigation contractor and general landscape installation team regarding the design of a deer-fenced garden space with annual vegetables and perennial fruits. We then returned the following fall and extended the stubbed up irrigation lines they left us, built raised garden beds, and made recommendations for season extension tools and trellising based on the personalized crop plan we put together.

October 2023

After BUG finished installing soil in the beds, we installed the in-bed drip irrigation lines and planted cold hardy leafy greens and garlic before winter.

We launched into 2024 with garden lessons on seed starting, helping guide these new gardeners in bringing their crop plan to life!

We set them up with season extension tools to warm up those October sown greens to promote early spring growth.

Spinach, ready for its first cutting, & mache (corn salad) not far behind!

Peas, kale, chard, broccoli, cabbage, scallions, garlic, shallots and more!

Ready for their next succession planting of summer crops!

And sowing more seeds...

Thinning carrots in greenhouse grow bags.

Harvesting carrots!

We also planned and planted a perennial border of espalier fruit trees (with trellising), asparagus, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, along with less mainstream perennial vegetables such as Turkish Rocket and Sea Kale!
