Summer Squash

$5.00

1 plant/ 3.5” or 4” pot.

Our current inventory consists of greenhouse varieties that are parthenocarpic (don’t need pollination to set fruit). They are currently appropriate to plant in greenhouses that are staying above freezing.

Summer squash are cold sensitive. We do not recommend planting them in outdoor gardens (even with mini hoophouses) until June. We plan to have more availability at the end of May. When growing cukes outdoors in Central Oregon, we recommend always growing them under the shelter of a mini hoophouse. Lift plastic up during the day for ventilation and close in the evening to retain heat. Alternatively, drape row cover over plants when needed.

Also, avoid massaging roots at planting!

Maveric: Hybrid. Expected days to maturity in Central Oregon: 56 days. Allows growers to get an extra-early head start on zucchini season with a big flush of beautiful shiny fruit while pollinators are absent. Strongly parthenocarpic, Maveric produces uniform, cylindrical fruit with very few culls. Compact, open plant with minimal spines makes for easy harvesting. Not recommended for field production, as growing outside may result in very small plants.

Easy Pick Gold: Hybrid. Expected days to maturity in Central Oregon: 64 days. Produces glossy, deep yellow, savory zucchini. If you’ve ever been irritated by the prickly stems on squash plants, you’ll appreciate this almost spine-free plant. Its open habit combined with the vibrant color of the fruit makes spotting the bounty effortless. A quick and painless harvest awaits all season long. Parthenocarpic.
