Ground cherries
Please note that our current inventory has not yet been hardened off outside the greenhouse.
Ground cherries are cold sensitive. When growing them outdoors in Central Oregon, we recommend always growing them under the shelter of a mini hoophouse with plastic that you can lift up during the day for ventilation and close in the evening to retain heat. Alternatively, you can cover them with row cover as needed.
For seed saving, opt for open pollinated varieties. Seeds saved from hybrid varieties will likely not produce future generations of tomatoes with the same characteristics.
When ripe, the husk around the fruit becomes papery dry and the fruit falls off the plant to be picked up from the ground. Some people place a tarp underneath the plants to make harvesting easier, but either way the husks keep the fruit clean.
‘Goldie’: Open pollinated. Estimated days to maturity in Central Oregon: 90 days. Bushy, spreading plants grow 2.5-3' tall and may need trellising.
‘Pineapple’: Open pollinated. Estimated days to maturity in Central Oregon: 89 days. This out-of-the-ordinary yellow ground cherry has a flavor that is sweet, fruity, and really does remind you of a pineapple. Makes a unique and wonderful salsa. The short-spreading vines produce abundantly.
