Cucumbers

from $4.00

1 plant/3.5” or 4” pot. Cucumbers are cold sensitive. When growing them outdoors in Central Oregon, we recommend always growing them under the shelter of a mini hoophouse in tomato cages to maximize vertical space. Lift plastic up during the day for ventilation and close in the evening to retain heat. Alternatively, try growing them in walls of water and drape row cover over plants when needed.

Also, avoid massaging roots at planting!

‘Mexican Sour Gherkin’ aka Cucamelon or Mouse Melon. Expected Days to Maturity in Central Oregon: 89 days. An heirloom that packs a lot of flavor in an adorable, teaspoon-sized treat! These little charmers are like no other, combining a powerful, sweet, cucumber flavor with a tangy, citrus twist. Delicate foliage and fist-fulls of fruit that look like doll-sized watermelons make these plants pretty enough to grow trellised in a flower garden or cascading in a hanging basket. The 1 inch cukettes are terrific tossed in a salad, and the plants are productive enough to have plenty for pickling.

‘Excelsior’: Hybrid. Expected Days to Maturity in Central Oregon: 64 days. Attractive, high-yielding pickler that does particularly well in greenhouse because it is parthenocarpic (doesn’t need pollination to set fruit) and has high disease resistance. Produces dark green, blocky, nicely proportioned 4–5" cucumbers with American-style spines. Vigorous, balanced plant with consistent fruit setting. Excellent flavor. Also does well in screen houses, in the field under row cover, or wherever else pollinators are absent.

‘Green Finger’: Hybrid. Expected Days to Maturity in Central Oregon: 69 days. Thin, tender skin, crisp flesh and a small seed cavity. Green Finger blew away hybrids in our trials for quality and yield. A field or open tunnel variety bred by Cornell University; requires pollination for fruit set.

‘Lemon’: Open Pollinated. Expected Days to Maturity in Central Oregon: 74 days. The shape, size, and color of a lemon, but with super-sweet flavor! This cucumber was famously peddled by one snake oil salesman as a genuine cross between an orange and a green cucumber. The huckster claimed that he had plucked an orange blossom from his daughter’s bridal bouquet (orange blossoms were a popular bridal flower in those days) and used it to pollinate a cucumber plant! These “true lemon cucumber” seeds were sold at a bargain price of $1 per seed! Indeed, the lemon cucumber is a pretty convincing fake, with round, lemon yellow fruit and a swollen blossom end, just like a real lemon. Alas, the lemon cuke is a true cucumber, a result of naturally selecting for round, yellow fruit. The lemon cucumber originated in the late 19th century and was introduced to the U.S. in 1894. The tasty fruit is low in cucurbitacin, the naturally occurring cucumber chemical that accounts for a slightly bitter taste. The flesh is citrusy and adds a real zip to salads! Fantastic for kids’ gardens.

‘Marketmore’: Open Pollinated. Expected Days to Maturity in Central Oregon: 74-84 days. This rightly popular variety is a consistent producer of delicious, mildly sweet cucumbers with dark green, protective skin.

‘Minime’: Hybrid. Expected Days to Maturity in Central Oregon: 59 days. Delightfully tempting baby snacking cukes measuring 2 ¾‒3 ¼" long. Thin-skinned, tender fruit. Parthenocarpic (is able to set fruit without pollination).

‘National Pickling’: Open Pollinated. Expected Days to Maturity in Central Oregon: 66 days. 5” short, thick cukes with blunt ends are perfect for pickles and delicious in salads. Fruits have striped, medium green skin and a slightly tapered shape to fit in a pickle jar. A heavy producer with black spines. Developed by the National Pickle Packers Association; the cuke pickle growers asked for.

‘Spacemaster’: Hybrid. Expected Days to Maturity in Central Oregon: 74 days. This compact cucumber is ideal for containers or hanging baskets. Its short, hardy vines produce slender, dark green fruits 7 1/2" long. Great in salads or plain.

‘Suyo Long’: Open Pollinated. Expected Days to Maturity in Central Oregon: 75 days. Long-fruited variety popular in China. A sweet-flavored, ribbed fruit growing up to 15" long. Widely adapted, grows well in hot weather, and sets early. Try using this unusual-looking cucumber in salads, for bread-and-butter or mixed vegetable pickles. Excellent eating quality. Bitter-free. Trellis for straight fruits.
